Other People's Spaces

Whether you go home, help a friend or embark on a new adventure, taking a break from the everyday can invigorating, revitalizing and refreshing. Let’s face it, just BEING somewhere else can help us feel lighter, better connected and more actively engaged. And if you have the itch to “walk in someone else’s shoes,” why not forget the blisters and simply spend some time in someone else’s space.  Chances are, no matter how long you stay, you will leave boasting some fresh insight and extra energy.

House-sitting, I recently spent the weekend at my mom’s home in Memorial.  Admittedly, it had been a while since my last substantial visit, but it didn’t take me long to realize how much I missed it. After a short 20 minute drive (without traffic) from my Heights-area abode, I felt worlds away from the typical daily grind as soon as I arrived. Maybe it is mom’s strategically placed signs with wise words such as, “Immaculate homes are for boring women.” Or, perhaps, it’s the soft water that is exclusive to suburbs, the 24-7 availability of something sweet or the impromptu advice handwritten on the chalkboard. But no matter the catalyst, being home always seems to bring warmth, comfort and safety to the soul.  So if you find yourself in need of a spatial vacation, don’t forget mom! A trip back to where you “were,” can often help you remember “who” you are.

They say that “home may be where the heart is,” but sometimes the heart desires something different.  The good news is that the change in scenery you need could be little more than a phone call away. Volunteer to watch the kids, the dog or the house for a family member or friend this summer. It’s a great way to escape your space. And offering a helping hand will keep you proactive in the lives of your loved ones.

Feeling a bit more adventurous? If so, a new group of online resources bring the idea of trading spaces to the next level.  A social network of sorts, websites such as Roofswap.com, HomeXchange.com and Houseswap.com connect individuals and families with “swap-able” spaces worldwide. Similar to real estate databases such as Houston’s HAR.com, these sites list and showcase homes complete with descriptions, maps, photos and more. Start an account and you are on your way! In 2010, let someone else play Houstonian while become a New Yorker, a Parisian or laidback islander.

Couch surfing is another option for explorer-types. Connecting empty couches with their seekers globally, the mission of the non-profit website CouchSurfing.org is to “create inspiring experiences” for the people they serve.  A great option for students and the budget conscious, couch surfing encourages cross cultural interaction, diversity, curiosity, appreciation and respect.  Hoping to help spread tolerance and create a global community, this virtual group of travelers intends to change the world one couch at a time.
